What is Oxidative Stress

December 21, 2016

I take a nutraceutical everyday to help support my telomeres, which are a key component to the aging process. One of the four key benefits of the IsaGenesis Product B gels I take is that it “reduces physical and mental oxidative stress.” Well of course the obvious question is – What is oxidative stress? … and the obvious questions that evolve from that question.

Here’s what I learned:

Oxidative stress is essentially an imbalance between the production of free radicals and the ability of the body to counteract or detoxify their harmful effects through neutralization by antioxidants.

How do you reduce oxidative stress on the body?

Here are four steps you can take to reduce unnecessary oxidation in your body.

  • Avoid sugar and processed foods while balancing your blood sugar levels.
  • Prevent infections.
  • Allow time for daily stress remedies.
  • Avoid toxins. (and remove toxins)
  • Promote the production of antioxidants.
  • Eat foods that are high in antioxidants.

Oxidative stress occurs when the production of reactive oxygen is greater than the body’s ability to detoxify the reactive intermediates. This imbalance leads to oxidative damage to proteins, molecules, and genes within the body.

How Oxidative stress is caused?

Overproduction of free radicals can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA), eventually leading to many chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke …

What causes oxidation in the human body?

The process of oxidation in the human body damages cell membranes and other structures including cellular proteins, lipids and DNA. When oxygen is metabolized, it creates ‘free radicals,’ which steal electrons from other molecules, causing damage.

If your struggling with holiday eating and addressing weight issues. This is a good area to know more about.

Wishing you a wonderful Christmas, happy holidays, and joyful New Year.

Warmly,
